The arrival of autumn can be used to carry out a series of works in a garden, in order to help the plants to overcome the demands of the cold seasons and to arrive strong, healthy and with excellent color to the spring. One of these tasks is the application of fertilizers to replace the nutrients consumed during the spring and summer season, which is the fastest growing plant. Renewing the nutrients is important because we prepare them to face the winter and to arrive in good condition next spring.

It should be taken into account that a single fertilizer should not be applied for the whole garden, but different products exist that are adapted to the needs and characteristics of the different types of existing plants, so it is recommended to consult in the specialized houses.

Application of fertilizers during autumn

Lawn: during the autumn is important the application of fertilizers to the grass because it contributes to the strengthening of the root systems. The type of fertilizer most suitable to apply to the lawn during the autumn is the soluble slow release of nutrients, with respect to its composition; it is desirable that it has a lower proportion of nitrogen and a greater contribution of phosphorus and potassium to promote root growth. It should also contain some sulfur to increase the lawn’s defenses against disease and cold.

Shrubs: a fertilizer with a higher percentage of phosphates is suitable for the trees and shrubs, because it stimulates a better flowering by the following spring. Its application is also beneficial for the fruit trees, avoiding the late ripening of the fruits. Potassium, for its part, is responsible for cell multiplication and tissue formation more resistant to frost, and also contributes to improve the quality and quantity of flowers and fruits.

Perennial plants: For these plants granular fertilizers with a 0-20-0 (0% nitrogen – 20% phosphorus – 0% potassium) ratio are usually used, which can be applied in the early or mid-autumn season.

If you have a rich substrate, the fertilizer will spread lightly around the plants to help promote root growth and an abundance of flowers or new growth in the spring. Because it is a granular fertilizer, it must be watered and incorporated very well to the earth, to avoid that it is in the surface and ends burning the leaves of the plants.
